"Catherine the Great and the National Gallery of Art"

A self-proclaimed “glutton for art,” Catherine the Great was one of the 18th century’s premier collectors, amassing a world class trove of Old Master paintings, drawings, and decorative objects.  But her cultural legacy suffered at the hands of Joseph Stalin, who secretly sold off many Hermitage masterpieces.

Join Susan Jaques, author of The Empress of Art: Catherine the Great and the Transformation of Russia as she explores the tsarina’s obsession with art and the surprising  beneficiary of the sell-off, our own National Gallery of Art.
