Join Active Minds for 'Send Silence Packing,' Breakfast & Display to Curb Student Suicides

This powerful display of nearly 1,000 backpacks representing students lost to suicide each year will be displayed at The George Washington University's scenic University Yard on September 5, 2019, from 9:30am - 4:00pm.

This powerful display of nearly 1,000 backpacks representing students lost to suicide each year will be displayed at The George Washington University's scenic University Yard on September 5, 2019, from 9:30am - 4:00pm.
  • All are welcome to join Active Minds for a breakfast reception from 8:45am - 9:15, then discussion until 9:45 am, at Tonic Restaurant (2036 G St. NW) for a conversation with Active Minds before viewing the exhibit. Please RSVP here.
  • Send Silence Packing is a signature program of Active Minds, founded by Alison Malmon at the University of Pennsylvania in 2003 following the suicide of her older brother, Brian. The Wharton Club of DC recognized Alison's phenomenal leadership and courage with its Joseph Wharton Award.
  • Send Silence Packing is a moving visual representation of the students lost every year to suicide, many who suffered in silence due to a lack of understanding a due to stigma surrounding their mental health. A majority of mental illnesses start between ages 14 and 24 when teens and young adults are in school, and suicide is the second leading cause of death for college students.
