TOPIC: "How to Identify, Cultivate, Ask, and Retain Major Donors"

You are invited to attend the next Roundtable on Friday, April 17, 12-2 pm, featuring a panel of experts on the topic: "How to Identify, Cultivate, Ask, and Retain Major Donors."

Panel Members:

  • Edie Fraser – Managing Partner and Diversity Chair, Diversified Search Ray & Berndtson and co-author Do Your Giving While You Are Living
  • Magne Gunderson – Director of Development, National Capital Area Council, Boy Scouts of America
  • Barbara Hall – Director of Development, The Phillips Collection
Moderator: Joan Walsh Cassedy, CAE, who has had diverse nonprofit and for-profit experience

Focus of each speaker:

  • Magne will handle the identifying, cultivating and asking parts of the agenda
  • Barbara will handle the retaining
  • Edie will speak from the donor’s viewpoint from lessons learned from her book on major donors

Who Should Attend:

  • Every nonprofit executive whose organization is facing greater challenges in our tough economy in dealing with major donors
  • Every nonprofit official who wants to engage smaller donors and build relations that will lead to some stepping up and becoming major donors of funds or other resources
  • Every professional who provides services to nonprofits and wants or needs to understand these critical elements of nonprofit survival
  • Anyone who is already involved in any of these key activities and wants to improve their skills with the help of experienced experts

(Meetings are third Friday of EVERY month - so go ahead and mark your calendar! For the 2009, these meetings will be held on 5/15, 6/19, 7/17, 8/21, 9/18, 10/16, 11/20, 12/18)

TIME: 12 noon - 2:00 pm. Lunch will be provided.

Members: Through Noon on 4/16 on this website: $15/person in advance (program, networking and full lunch)(This applies to members and one guest - same per person price; more guests are at other price, which is still a bargain)

Others (including members who register late or pay at door, third or higher guest of members - and all non-members): $25/person for lunch and program (still a very good deal)

LOCATION: The downtown Washington, DC offices of Care2, at 1100 15th Street, NW (on the northwestern corner of 15th and L Streets), Suite 600. FYI, Care2 shares the sixth floor with Oxfam America. If you come by Metro, Care2’s building is located two blocks north of the McPherson Square station (orange and blue lines) and three blocks East of the Farragut North station (red line).

Edie Fraser
Managing Partner and Diversity Chair,
Diversified Search Ray & Berndtson

Edie Fraser is an internationally acclaimed business professional and an executive search executive, champion and advocate for diversity and women. Based in Washington, DC, she is Managing Partner and Diversity Chair of the largest woman-owned executive search firm, Diversified Search Ray & Berndtson. She is known as a strong advocate for top diverse talent and has both recruited and counseled with more than 250 corporations and organizations. Edie has close relationships with hundreds of Diversity Officers and executives committed to diversity leadership.

Edie Fraser is the co-author of Do Your Giving While You Are Living. Edie Fraser has won more than 35 major diversity, women and philanthropy awards and she served on numerous boards and advisory boards. She started her professional career in the Peace Corps and ended up after five years as a Desk Officer for Africa and then spent the next five years in the Nation’s Poverty Program work and has devoted her life to believing that one gives back.

Edie built the Public Affairs Group. She founded Diversity Best Practices (DBP), the Business Women’s Network and Best Practices in Corporate Communications. Edie has also served as publisher of major resources on Diversity and Women. She has published numerous books and publications and given hundreds of speeches. Edie designed the CEO Diversity Leadership program, written and published The Diversity Primer; The Chief Diversity Officer; Winning the Race for Diverse Talent-A Major Report; CEOs Who Get It from their Hearts and Souls; and she and worked with many CEOs on an Executive Score card on diversity measurement.

Sought after board member, Edie serves as a Founding member of the Committee of 200; Board of SCORE; Advisory Board of Enterprising Women Magazine. She is on the Leadership Circle of three women’s political organizations. She is on the Leadership Board of the National Foundation of Teaching Entrepreneurship in Washington. (NFTE) and a Past President in Washington of the National Association of Women Business Owners; and Leadership board of The European-American Women (EAWC). She serves on the board of the World Affairs Council in Washington, D.C. and is on the Advisory Board nationally of the Center for Citizen Diplomacy.

Edie Fraser’s numerous awards include the following examples: eWomen Network International Femtor Award; Count-Me-In Leader Entrepreneurial Award; Euro-American Women’s Council Artemis Award; Enterprising Women Hall of Fame; First Global ATHENA Award; Women of Color Award; LATINAStyle Mentor of Distinction Award. Edie is profiled in the 2008 film called GLOW of 15 top women leaders.

Previously she has received awards for supporting women by several state governments. She also received the Asian American Advocate Award by the National Council for Asian American Business; Minority Business Special Advocate award; Top 50 Americans Minorities award; selected as one of the 50 Americans doing the most for Diversity; and The Disabled Advocate by the National Roundtable on Corporate Development for Americans with Disabilities; as well as The Big Brothers Youth Public Service Award.

Magne G. Gundersen, Director of Development
National Capital Area Council, Boy Scouts of America

As the son of Norwegian immigrants, Magne Gundersen received a first-class education in American values and culture through Scouting. He started as a Cub Scout in 1973, advanced to the rank of Eagle Scout in 1981 and then launched his career as a professional Scout in 1986 when he became a paraprofessional – that’s Scouting lingo for "intern" – for his hometown council in Brooklyn, NY.

After Brooklyn, Magne gathered extensive experience in field, finance and operational management for large metropolitan and suburban Scouting regions while working for Staten Island Council (NY), Monmouth Council (NJ), Greater New York Councils (NY) and Twin Rivers Council (NY). He took on the challenge of Director of Development for the National Capital Area Council (NCAC) in January 2008.

Magne’s skills are finely tuned in the areas of special event fundraising; capital and endowment giving; volunteer recruitment; staff leadership, motivation and management; fiscal management; membership management; and council/district administration. His goals for the National Capital Area Council include increasing awareness of the Council’s impact in local communities and providing opportunities for individuals and corporations to utilize their resources – be that money, time or ideas – to support Scouting.

Magne is a graduate of Pace University, where he majored in professional studies and minored in youth agency administration. He and his wife, Susan, have two children: Danielle, age 7, and Kristian, age 11, who is well on his way to Eagle Scout.
