- A writer, editor, and translator, Alexandra (“Alex”) has a Master’s Degree in Translation from the University of Paris, France.
- The diplomat’s daughter grew up in the Congo, Gabon, and France before settling in Washington, DC.
- She worked for decades in international organizations as a translator and reporter covering Latin American and Caribbean development projects and cultural events, and producing annual reports.
- Her leadership experience includes serving on the boards of the American Translators Association and its DC area chapter, and of Tango Mercurio, a DC nonprofit arts-education organization.
- A lifelong love of folk music and dance led her to the tango: she started dancing it in 2006, publishing articles about it in 2007, teaching it in 2010, and studying its history in 2013.
- Alex has spearheaded Tango Mercurio’s Older Adult Outreach Program since 2018, bringing the music, dance, and poetry of tango to hundreds of older adults in senior day care centers and residences, mainly in partnership with DC-area nonprofit Arts for the Aging.
- She is also a member and Managing Director of Quicksilver Senior Dance, an improvisational dance company whose members are all over 65.
- In 2024, Alex obtained certification as an instructor in Adapted Tango Group Classes for Older Individuals and those with Movement Disorders by Dr. Madeleine Hackney, a professional dancer and neuroscientist at Emory University who developed the Program.
